Modern Facade Painting: Traditional Yet Contemporary

Facade Painting and Facade Art – History and Development

Façade painting has a history stretching back thousands of years: the oldest known examples come from Pompeii. During the Middle Ages, this art form largely fell into obscurity before experiencing a significant revival during the Renaissance, beginning in Italy.

Thanks to the trompe-l'œil movement in France and the large-scale murals by Mexican artist Diego Rivera—Frida Kahlo’s husband—facade art has been continuously developed and refined.

Starting in 2000, talented graffiti artists began to explore large-scale facade design, which gave rise to the international street art and mural movement just a few years later.

Today, large-scale murals—that is, expansive wall paintings on building facades—have become an integral part of the urban landscape. Marketing agencies and companies, too, have long since recognized artistic facade design as an effective and eye-catching advertising medium.
