Facade painting has a long tradition; the oldest works originate from Pompeii. During the Middle Ages, the technique fell into oblivion, but it was revived in the Renaissance, originating from Italy.
This art form was continuously developed through the Trompe-l'œil movement in France and the murals by Frida Kahlo's husband, Diego Rivera.
From the year 2000 onwards, talented graffiti artists discovered large-scale facade art, leading to the emergence of the street art/mural movement a few years later.
Today, large murals (extensive wall paintings) are an integral part of the urban landscape, and marketing agencies have long recognized facade design on large walls as an effective advertising medium.
